Exam Notes: Media Language (SEMIOTICS0

- Barthes came up with the Semiotic theory.
- Semiotics is the study of meaning-making, the study of sign processes and meaningful communication
- Two words to do with semiotics is denotation and connotation.
- Denotation - the literal or primary meaning of a word, in contrast to the feelings or ideas that the word suggests.
- Connotation - an idea or feeling which a word invokes for a person in addition to its literal or primary meaning.
- Eugenics is breeding out all the strong people and getting away of the weak.
- Symbol/Signs are meaningless.

Using semiotic theories notes from summer booklets to help write our essay based on symbols used in horrors.

- Words that should be used are signifier and signified. Connotes and signified have the same meaning.

The four paragraphs:
1) Symbolic Codes - Phallic, Yonic; this is all based on your mise-en-scene.
2) Technical Codes - Camera and Editing
3) Written and Audio Codes
4) Discussing the use of meaning based on reception theory - Stuart Hall
